KID NATION: PROLOGUE

Amidst all the media coverage of Kid Nation and the controversy over whether the children were exploited/mistreated, no one has mentioned that Kid Nation is the first reality TV show to cast season 2 before season 1 has even aired. Not even Aaron Sorkin gets that kind of treatment. It’s unheard of in network television.

The deadline for season 2 applications was Aug. 3rd, with shooting to occur “at a remote location” for a 40 day period between October and December. Perhaps concern over the show's alleged violations of child labor laws is behind the rush to get a second season in the can ahead of any official action being taken?

While all the attention so far has been on the ages of the participants, as a viewer you have to wonder how they are going to handle things like editing and pacing and plot/character development when dealing with a 40 person cast. Myself, I find it takes me 2 or 3 episodes to get the faces and names sorted out on Big Brother or Survivor, and their casts are less than half the size of Kid Nation.

Have you checked out the bios “created and designed by the Kids,” on the official website? With a couple of exceptions (Cody actually sounds like a 9 year old), they are soooo too-much-help-with-the-science-project.

The cast breaks-out like this:
Females 21
Males 19
8 year olds 2
9 year olds 4
10 year olds 6
11 year olds 11
12 year olds 8
13 year olds 2
14 year olds 6
15 year olds 1

A curious feature of the casting is where the kids are from. Unlike every other show on television – scripted or unscripted – this one does not have a single cast member from either California or New York. The 40 kids come from 15 states; with 2 states, Georgia and Nevada, accounting for 30% of the cast.
